![]() ![]() Years in the 21st century are nice 'n easy. Years written in Roman numerals can be quite long and scary – but breaking them down we see that they're actually quite simple. To write 1582 in numerals, we take 1000 ( M), 500 ( D), 50 ( L), 30 ( XXX) and 2 ( II), to make MDLXXXII. Broken down we have CM = 900, XC = 90 and IV = 4 adding all these up brings us back to 994. The number 994 is a great example of this rule – it's written CMXCIV.
